What We Do

Befriending Service

firsthand is a charity registered under the name Edinburgh Sitters. We provide support to young people, aged 12-24 who are isolated as a result of a disablity or mental health issue.

Our befriending service aims to help young people to:

  • Take increased responsibility
  • Have an improved sense of well-being and self-worth
  • Develop life skills and confidence
  • Gain better access to the community
  • Build healthy, positive relationships with others

Our Befriending service has been awarded the Approved Provider Standard by Befriending Network Scotland, which is given to projects that have safe and effective practices.

About the Service

What is a Befriender?

A befriender is someone who is specially matched to you, to do things with you that you want to do and would find difficult to do on your own. This can include attending a course, doing a fun sports activity, going to the museums, walking in the Pentlands, going to a cafe or just talking.

How often do I meet them?

You agree when to meet your befriender, usually once a week or fortnight.

Who are the Befrienders?

All of the Befrienders are volunteers, aged 18 and over, with a wide range of skills, experience and interests.

How are Befrienders Selected ?

All Befrienders must satisfactorily complete an interview, two references, a medical reference and an enhanced disclosure. They attend an induction course and are supported by their Befriending Coordinator.
